Hurricanes usually cause alarm for those who aren’t ready for it. Should you cover patio furniture? Maybe you’re
wondering whether installing storm doors was a good idea in the middle of the season. Maybe you’re thinking, “this
is like winter prep. No big deal.”
While preparing for a hurricane is similar to preparing for cold-weather storms or other natural disasters, there are
some unique hazards to be aware of.
Here are some quick tips for preparing your home’s hurricane checklist:
Secure patio furniture
Heavy outdoor furniture can be secured with bungee cords. If you have an outdoor air conditioning system, shield it
with a tarp or build a secure frame around it.
Move small projectiles
Smaller yard items should be brought inside for safety, be it into the main house, a garage or a secured shed with a
durable foundation. This includes bikes, small trash cans and garden decor.
Secure larger projectiles
Some items may be too large to bring inside, so it’s best to anchor them. Sandbags are another great way to hold down
items.
Safeguard doors & windows
Storm doors are built to endure high wind speeds and impact from debris. Storm windows and increased weather
stripping will also help.
Have emergency kits
A first aid kit should be stored in a water safe area. This kit should include bandages and antiseptics in the case
of injury. Also, keep carbon monoxide detectors installed with backup batteries.
Have an evacuation plan
In the case the premises need to be evacuated, have a plan in place. Include a meeting spot, emergency supplies and
information about local services and shelters.
Hurricanes can deal damage to areas quickly, but with the right precautions, you can gain better peace of mind and
protect your home.
